Classes at HealthInfo Island : "Foundations of Life Awareness"

Foundations of Life Awareness
May 1st for all
May 4th for women
11am SLT
Facilitated by Zotarah Shepherd
Would you like to raise the bar for your first life, find deeper meaning or explore those things you wish you knew when you were younger? Would you like to prepare a foundation for a more fulfilling life? This class is an introduction of concepts about life. The classes are interactive and participatory. We will learn from each other. We will use the magic of SL to illustrate ideas and share. Teachers feel free to borrow my ideas for your classes in SL. I also welcome your collaboration. We will explore SL and online resources, which may prove especially valuable to newbies. You might find this class a short review, then a gestalt of familiar theories with practical applications.
Please IM me (Zotarah Shepherd) if you want more information.
Times and days may be arranged for this class through the HealthInfo Island Library. If you are interested, I hope you will join the collective process.

The Mountains at HealthInfo Island are wonderful, peaceful and a place of silence.
This announcement will also be published at:

THE DREAMS SECOND ANNUAL COMMUNITY FAIR AND FUNDRAISER

This year, the Fair has two functions: 1. To highlight some of the activities in Second Life that may be of interest but not visible to the general population. 2. To act as a fundraiser for the American Stroke Association Stroke Connection Magazine. The magazine is sent to stroke survivors and their families to help them understand the abrupt life changes that stroke brings. Often, it is provided without cost. Dreams is the activity base and support group for a group of stroke survivors in SL as well as people who are interested in Asperger Syndrome and Autism. What is involved? * We will have booths and tents available to groups to show off their organizations. * Each group

Bernard (Bernie) Mnemonic

By Brielle Coronet
When Bernie Mnemonic enrolled in an English class at the University Center of Missouri (UCM), he never could have foreseen the journey he would be making into the virtual world of Second Life. Much like taking the scenic route on a drive in real life, Bernie found himself off the beaten path.
Although he was in school earning credits towards his Medical Technology degree, the English class was required study. Unexpectedly, this particular English professor decided to experiment with teaching in Second Life, and in doing so, Bernie’s life intersected with fate.
A hospital lab tech in real life, Bernie enjoyed this new way of learning. But then, life threw his family a curveball—Bernie’s three year old grandchild Donavynn became ill. It started gradually, with loss of appetite, tiredness, and eventually acute bruising. Finally, in February 2006, Bernie’s grandson got the diagnosis: Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL).
ALL is one of the most common cancer types in children, with the peak age range of 3-5 years old, although it can occur in adolescents, and even adults. Fortunately, over 95% of children with ALL enjoy remission. Treatment usually involves an intensive, multi-drug regimen.
But, Bernie was in the right place at the right time. Some may call it fate or destiny, but Bernie definitely regards it as divine intervention. It was his professor who told Bernie about Health Info Island. There, he met with Carolina Keats who listened to Bernie, and together they set up meetings to further explore his ideas.
You see, as devastating as this diagnosis was, Bernie was not one to sit idly on the sidelines. He decided to become proactive. Bernie and his real life daughter, Dophin’s Writer began investigating Second Life, visiting such sites as Rachelville, and Info Island. What they saw impressed them, and they realized that their real life catalyst could yield a positive outcome. They saw potential for helping other parents of children dealing with major health problems, including cancer.
According to Bernie, there is alot of “potential for comprehensive, reliable health information with an interactive component” for other patients and families in Second Life. Indeed, Bernie and his daughter both envision a child friendly area with quality consumer health level information for parents.
Pushing the idea to its limits, Bernie also hopes to invite child avatars to accompany their parents to the site so that the children can, for a moment, feel free from illness. He also would like to include an information arena for children and their parents to learn about the procedures and treatments they will be experiencing.
As Bernie puts it, he dreams “of a place of hope as well as knowledge…a place to learn but also a place to escape and have fun.”
We dream that with him.

Second Life healthcare advocate interviewed for ‘Who’s On Second?’

“In this episode of Who’s On Second? I talk with Stacy Stone (Goodwillstacy Stindberg). Stacy lives with Stacy’s transformation into a Second Life healthcare advocate began when she was 12 and was bitten in the face by a dog. The jaw injury that resulted in facial pain and a series of operations that left her with titanium jaw joints and a powerful desire to be an informed health consumer. Stacy is now a 25-year-old self-taught online marketing expert, writer and entrepreneur. She’s brought that expertise into Second Life on HealthInfo Island where she wants to make it easier for other patient advocate groups to nurture their niches in the 3D space. Hope you enjoy the show”

Watch our moves!

Expect to see a change in the landscape very soon, as HealthInfo Island relocates! We're not cutting ties with InfoIsland, but expanding our partnership possibilities by moving farther out. UMPC will be an immediate neighbor, and another large Canadian science and medicine concern will be another. This leaves us two sides free for new, health-related neighbors. With the growing presence of healthcare in SL, we'd like to encourage the growth of nonprofit, support-oriented sims in the neighborhood.
