I've heard from a friend that it can be cheaper to get dental procedures outside the US, like Thailand. Is it safe? How can I tell?

Dental tourism is a newish term that's related to medical tourism, and it means going outside your own country for the purpose of having medical procedures done - as a cost savings measure, or maybe because you believe you'll get better care there. According to a February, 2008 article in the New York Times, about half a million Americans traveled outside the country for this purpose in 2006.
